A Modern Brownstone Transformation: The South Slope Home of Lauren and Will

In the heart of Brooklyn's South Slope neighborhood, a 1901 brownstone has undergone a remarkable transformation, thanks to the expertise of New York-based interior designer, Crystal Sinclair. The co-founder of Crystal Sinclair Designs (CSD), a small, full-service interior design firm, was hired to breathe new life into this historic property, which is now home to Lauren and Will.

The design journey began with a vintage floor lamp in the living room, serving as the starting point for the carefully curated furnishings and accessories that would follow. Crystal Sinclair's goal was to create a feeling of ease for anyone who steps inside the home, while introducing warm colors throughout to create depth without being overbearing.

The interior design incorporates a creative mix of textures such as velvet, marble, and bouclé, resulting in a sensual and cozy home. To achieve the same eclectic feel, one can use a similar mix of textures. The living room, much lighter and brighter compared to the dark entryway, serves as a welcoming space, while several contemporary artworks complement the daring palette of the home.

The kitchen features a unique blue and green color scheme, contrasting with the striking blue and lilac marble in the bathroom. A metal and glass wall was installed to separate and connect the main bedroom and the ensuite bathroom, adding a modern touch to the midcentury modern style that ties into the brownstone itself.

One of the challenges faced by the design team was optimizing the long, narrow rooms, while being mindful of the lighting. This was expertly addressed, resulting in a cohesive space that demonstrates it's possible to create a harmonious blend using clashing colors, as shown by the use of red accent rugs.

The statement contemporary chandelier, priced at $2,295 (originally $409), adds an extra dimension of visual interest, while the price of the red accent rug is $349 (originally $409). The creative texture mix, priced at $44.99, was another thoughtful addition to the home's design.

The home purchase, originally priced at $110, was secured by Lauren and Will for $88. The transformation of this brownstone has not only created a unique vibe that leaves no one indifferent but also demonstrates the potential for bringing new life to historic properties.

Crystal Sinclair Designs, a husband and wife full-service interior design firm founded in 2019, specializes in residential and hospitality projects in NYC and worldwide. The design studio is located in New York City.
