Advancement at Archway Homes sets green policies in motion
In the realm of sustainable housebuilding, Archway Homes is making significant strides. The company, based in the UK, is actively working towards a greener future under the leadership of its new Land and Sustainability Director, Rachael Whelan.
Rachael, who is no stranger to Archway Homes, has been with the company for nine years. Starting with administrative tasks, she has since taken on roles in finance, sales, and land. Her journey with Archway Homes began in 2013, and she is the daughter of the company's founders, Paul and Anne Pedley.
Rachael's passion for sustainability is evident in her new role. She is committed to leading Archway Homes' Green Agenda, a mission that aligns with the company's environmental strategy. This strategy focuses on resource efficiency, sustainable building practices, and the use of renewable energy sources such as photovoltaics, heat recovery, and rainwater collection for sanitary facilities. The aim is to create buildings that support climate neutrality and minimise raw material use.
Rachael's efforts have already resulted in advanced measures aligned with these goals. She is promoting green building technologies, sustainable resource management, and integrating environmental considerations into the company’s development projects to enhance eco-friendliness.
Archway Homes is also planning to launch a new specification to ensure its homes achieve the EPC A-rating, the highest energy efficiency rating. This move is in line with the Government's pledge that there will be no fossil fuels in new homes by 2025. The company is also investigating the use of different materials and technologies towards zero carbon homes.
Rachael finds her role in housebuilding rewarding, especially when she sees customers' excitement about their new homes. Her work extends beyond the office, as she is an associate governor at her son's school, where she works to encourage the environmental agenda.
Rachael lives in an Archway home near Chester with her two children and her husband, Matt, who is Development Director at Archway Homes. Before joining Archway Homes, Rachael worked overseas for the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology and Chester Zoo's conservation department. She holds a Masters in Ecology and Conservation from Imperial College London and studied Ecology at Lancaster University.
