In an exciting development for the city of Solingen, construction has begun on a new housing project near the former Birker Bad. Commissioner Andreas Budde has expressed his satisfaction, as not only a construction gap is being filled, but also modern, high-quality, and affordable apartments are being created.

The 41-apartment construction project is receiving financial support from the NRW state government under the “Sozialer Wohnungsbau” (social housing) program. The city of Solingen and other public sources are also contributing to ensure the affordability of the housing units.

The apartments are designed to meet the latest climate and energy efficiency standards, aiming for at least KfW 55 efficiency level or better. This includes high-quality insulation, energy-efficient heating systems, and renewable energy integration, such as solar panels, to minimize the carbon footprint and align with climate goals.

The apartments are designated as affordable housing, with rent limits set according to social housing guidelines. Priority for allocation is given to low- and moderate-income households, with eligibility criteria reflecting income thresholds established by the state. The apartments are intended to address local demand for subsidized rental housing and contribute to social integration.

Commissioner Budde handed over an approval decision worth 11.3 million euros for the project, and he stated that the development will move the city forward. The construction project will fill a central construction gap on the edge of the city center, and the apartments are designed to be barrier-free.

Of the 41 apartments being built, 33 will be subject to a 30-year public commitment, and these will be available for individuals who qualify for a "Wohnberechtigungsschein". The exact number of apartments that fall under this category was not provided.
