In a bid to support marine conservation, a student named Matisse, in their final year at Arts University Bournemouth, has embarked on a unique project. The project, titled "Reef Rescue", consists of three parts: collectible sea creature figures, packaging, and advertisements, all aimed at drawing attention to the plight of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR).

Matisse, who is studying Modelmaking, used a proper camera for the first time to take photos for the campaign. The photographs were edited using Photoshop, with the addition of a slogan, the Ocean Generation logo, and extra information. For the shoot, Matisse captured the collectible sea creature figures at the beach, their vibrant colours popping against the backdrop of the natural setting.

The packaging for the collectibles is designed to resemble a giant life jacket, a symbol of protection for the endangered marine life. Each box has a belt buckle and tear strip to open, adding a tactile element to the experience. The artwork for the packaging was sent to industrial printers and laser cut into shape, resulting in a high-quality, eye-catching design.

Matisse used various techniques like hand sewing, needle felting, and crochet to create the collectible characters. Each figure is designed to be instantly recognizable, bright, flamboyant, and full of personality, ensuring they stand out and leave a lasting impression.

Throughout the project, Matisse provided updates to Gemma Connell, the contact at Ocean Generation, and received valuable feedback and useful links for the project. Connell, who was impressed by Matisse's work, described the project as a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding experience.

However, it's important to note that the Reef Rescue campaign is not an official initiative by Ocean Generation, and the organization does not sell or distribute the collectible critters. The project was created for educational purposes, serving as a powerful reminder of the threats facing the Great Barrier Reef.

The current state of the Great Barrier Reef shows significant stress due to elevated sea surface temperatures contributing to mass coral bleaching events, resulting in severe coral loss, especially in the northern region. While management programs are strengthening reef conservation, coral recovery remains slow and contingent upon future climate conditions.

Climate stability, reducing thermal stress, and protecting water quality are critical to the reef's ongoing health and resilience. Ocean Generation's website, linked on the packaging, provides more information about the organization's efforts and how individuals can contribute to marine conservation.
