According to a recent survey, personalized playlists and song recommendations are playing a significant role in how people discover new music on audio streaming services. The study, which polled 1,156 individuals in Germany aged 16 and over, including 748 users of audio streaming services, reveals some interesting insights about the usage and preferences of these services.

One of the key findings is that 43% of users frequently discover new music through personalized playlists or song recommendations. This behaviour is particularly common among younger users, with 30% of those aged 16 to 29 reporting this. However, only 45% of users think that the music and playlist recommendations of their streaming service match their taste well.

The survey also found that the average user has 6 of their own playlists, with 28% having created 3 to 5 personal playlists, and 19% having even created 10 or more. In contrast, only 21% say they create only 1 or 2 playlists. Interestingly, 74% of users of audio streaming services create their own playlists, demonstrating a strong desire for personalisation.

Another important finding is that the vast selection of pre-made playlists makes it easier to find the perfect soundtrack for every specific situation in a short amount of time. Sebastian Kloß, an expert for consumer technology at Bitkom, notes that what was once the mixtape on cassette is today's digital playlist.

Algorithms play a crucial role in the creation of these playlists, learning with every song a user listens to. According to Kloß, the more music you listen to, the more accurate the recommendations will be. This personalisation is evident in the fact that 23% of audio streaming users frequently listen to playlists they didn't create themselves.

The age group of 65 to 74 years is particularly dissatisfied, with only 28% agreeing that the recommendations match their taste. This suggests that there is still room for improvement in catering to the tastes of older users.

Lastly, 46% of playlist users share their playlists with family, friends, or acquaintances, and 9% make their playlists publicly accessible. This sharing aspect adds a social dimension to the music listening experience, allowing users to discover new music through the playlists of others.

In conclusion, personalized playlists and song recommendations are a powerful tool for discovering new music on audio streaming services. While there is still room for improvement in catering to the tastes of all age groups, the ability to create and share playlists adds a unique and engaging aspect to the music listening experience.
