Pour yourself a drink and huddle up, friends. Artist Constanze Klar’s got a bone to pick and the beach shack’s the place to do it.
Artist Constanze Klar (45) crafted a temporary beach bar on the shores of Spiekeroog to spark juicy chats and probing discussions in the midst of a roily, chaotic world. "People ain't talking no more," she tells the German Press Agency. "Soon as that pandemic hit, it been a mess to keep an open mind." She envisions the bar as a haven where individuals who wouldn't ordinarily socialize can stir things up over a drink.
Klar, an artist from Berlin, nabbed this year's Spiekeroog Tent Pitch Residency, a scholarship bestowed yearly for ambitious art projects touching on social or ecological concerns. During her residency, she settles into a tent inside the dunes, roughly three kilometers from the isle's quaint village. The residency wraps up on July 4.
Inside her makeshift watering hole, put together from salvaged cabinet doors, Klar seeks out fellow vacationers and locals to dive into deep chats related to our current situation - right smack in the apocalypse on the beach of this East Frisian island. "The end of the f. world" serves as the project's name and mission.

"The political goings-on in Germany lately terrify me, like we're living in the apocalypse," she says, raising concerns over a right-wing swing following the Union's vote on a migration policy motion, thanks to help from the AfD, in the Bundestag earlier this year. She also frets about social polarization, with folks being cast out and devalued.
Klar snags consent from her bar patrons before pressing Record on those juicy conversations. She's planning to mold an animation from these recordings to display on the island in early July, featuring clay figurines in full action.
