Keep a Tab on the Feathered Folk: Berlin's Big Bird Count Call!
Berliners Encouraged to Count Birds - From Sparrowhawk to Sparrow - Berlin residents advocate for bird census
Berlin's skyline isn't just about architecture; it's home to a myriad of avian residents too! From the dashing Peregrine falcons to the vibrant blue-and-orange kingfishers, the city boasts a diverse bird population. But just how many of these winged wonders call Berlin home? The Nature Conservation Bund Germany (NABU) and the Bavarian Nature Conservation Association LBV want to find out, and they're relying on your help!
During the "Peep Time for Garden Birds" event taking place from the 9th to the 11th of May, they're urging you to become a citizen byrd-watcher! Whether you're nestled in a tranquil garden spot, ensconced in a park bench, or gazing out of a window, take an hour to jot down the bird species you spot. Remember to note the highest number of each species you see within your chosen hour.
Your findings can be submitted effortlessly via the internet, an app, or a good old-fashioned post. This information helps NABU and LBV get insights into the current birdscape, which can offer a richer picture of the situation beyond official population trends. Over 1,980 folks participated in last year's event, resulting in the counting of a whopping 36,000 birds!
Berlin's NABU groups are even offering guided excursions during the counting weekend. If you're keen on joining, the Lichtenberg district group is departing at 9:00 AM on the 11th of May for a count in the Wartenberger field area. For families with little feathered fans, there's a birdwatching adventure for children aged accompanied by their parents planned for the 10th of May at 2:00 PM in the Rummelsburger Bucht.
