Tracking Feathered Friends: Berlin's Residents Invited to Bird Census
Invitation for Berliners: Join the Bird Count Initiative - Berliners advocated for a bird census
Berlin's skies flower with the flight of diverse avians - from Peregrine Falcons to blue and orange Kingfishers. But just how many of these winged wonders call our city home? The Nature Conservation Union Germany (NABU) and the Bavarian Nature Conservation Association LBV are eager to uncover these figures and need your help. During the "Hour of Garden Birds" public participation event on 9th to 11th May, bird watchers are encouraged to take part.
Curious participants can monitor a selection of bird species in Berlin's city center, like the chaffinch, recommended by NABU Berlin. Known for its red face and bright yellow wing stripes, it's also commonly called the brambling. For those venturing beyond the city, the vibrant red tail of the redstart, a bird with distinct characteristics, is easily spotted. Familiar faces like sparrows and pigeons should not be overlooked.
Last year, a whopping 36,000 birds were tallied within the city limits.
Participation is simple! Observant individuals choose a peaceful location - be it a garden, park, or window - and jot down the highest number of each species observed within an hour. You can submit your findings via the internet, app, or mail. These observations contribute valuable information to help nature conservation associations better understand current bird population trends, complementing official data collection efforts. Last year, 1,980 Berliners participated, spotting 36,000 birds.
Join your local NABU groups on the counting weekend! Participants in the Lichtenberg district can join an excursion on 11th May at 9:00 AM in the Wartenberger field area. On the 10th May at 2:00 PM, families with children are invited to join a counting event in the Rummelsburger Bucht.
