Bird Count in Berlin: Spot Your Feathered Friends from the Kingfisher to the Sparrow - Join in the Action!
Berliner Invited for Avian Census: From Eisvogel to Sparrow - Berliners urged bird census
Want to know more about the winged wonders residing in Berlin's bustling metropolis? Here's your chance! The Nature Conservation Union Germany (NABU) and the Bavarian Nature Conservation Association LBV are on the hunt for bird species in the city, and they need your help. From May 9 to 11, during the "Hour of Garden Birds," everyone is invited to join in!
Dressed in vibrant plumage, Peregrine falcons can be found soaring throughout the city, while the captivating blue and orange Kingfisher calls the capital home. But what about other avian residents and their numbers? That's where you come in!
If you're in Central Berlin, keep an eye out for the goldfinch, recommended by NABU Berlin. Its striking red face and striking yellow wing stripes (also known as the common chaffinch) make it easy to spot. In the outskirts, the redstart with its distinctive wagging tail steals the show. Even common residents like sparrows and pigeons warrant attention.
Last year, a whopping 36,000 birds were recorded in Berlin. Impressive, isn't it?
Here's what to do: Find a quiet spot - be it your garden, park, or window - and observe birds for an hour. Record the maximum number of each species you see during that time. Results can be submitted online, via app, or by mail. By doing so, you'll help nature conservation associations better understand current bird population trends, benefiting from the supplementary data to official census results. Last year, 1,980 people participated in Berlin, spotting a total of 36,000 birds.
To make the event even more exciting, Berlin's local NABU groups are offering guided tours during the counting weekend. On May 11 at 9:00 AM in the Wartenberger field, Lichtenberg district group invites you to join. On May 10 at 2:00 PM in the Rummelsburger Bucht, children can join their parents in bird-watching fun.
