Berlin's Tegel Airport Transformed: 'LIFTOFF' Marks New Cultural Hub

Berlin's former Tegel Airport (TXL) has been transformed into a hub of culture and innovation. The Alte Frachtkantine, once the airport's canteen, has been repurposed into a vibrant cultural venue by the Turbulence collective. The collective's first event, 'LIFTOFF', took place on September 30, marking the beginning of a new era for the former airport.

The Turbulence collective has turned the 3,747 square metres of outdoor space at the former canteen into a stage for live music, DJs, visual installations, and performance art. The collective aims to create an inclusive and accessible party space, collaborating with Initiative Barrierefrei Feieren to ensure all attendees can enjoy the events. Accessibility features include barrier-free entry, accommodations for impaired attendees, and an on-site Awareness Team.

Future events are still in the planning stages, with free admission limited to 700 attendees. The collective promises to book artists with clear backgrounds, free from anti-discriminatory behaviours or practices. While the Urban Tech Republic project is developing the former airport into a science and technology park, the repurposing of the Alte Frachtkantine into a cultural venue is a separate initiative.

The repurposing of the Alte Frachtkantine into a cultural venue by the Turbulence collective is a testament to Berlin's commitment to sustainable innovation and cultural diversity. With its focus on accessibility, inclusivity, and high-quality artistic performances, the venue promises to be a significant addition to Berlin's nightlife and cultural scene.
