Bavarian Forest State Garden Spectacle: A Dragon-Filled Nature Bonanza

Large bodies of water, expansive greenery, and a towering dragon exhibited at a local botanical garden event. - Blooming plants, a generous sprinkling of water, and a majestic dragon gracing the annual country garden exhibition.

Get ready for the Bavarian Forest State Garden Show, just a week away from opening! Environment Minister Thorsten Glauber (Free Voters) toured the show site in Furth im Wald (Cham district) and confirmed it'll be a top-notch presentation of Bavaria and the region. With a hefty €11.3 million investment, this event is set to make a grand impact.

This fantastic extravaganza, known as the 38th State Garden Show, runs for an impressive 137 days, from May 22nd to October 5th. The grand opening will be performed by none other than the regional Minister-President, Markus Söder (CSU), according to local reports.

Under the catchy "Magically much to experience" theme, the town offers visitors an abundance of garden and landscape architecture, blooming gardens, a beehive, artwork, craftsmanship, and lip-smacking local gastronomy. An astounding 2,600 shrubs, 240 trees, and almost 150,000 perennials and bulbs have been planted to ensure a spectacle of color! The show also tackles climate change and drought. Over 3,000 events are planned throughout the show.

A striking feature of the State Garden Show? The mythical Furth Drachenstich dragon, a famous figure from a historical play in the region with over 500 years of tradition and UNESCO intangible cultural heritage status. The show is brimming with dragon-themed designs, including flower beds shaped like dragon scales, a dragon's cave, and guided tours where visitors can marvel at a high-tech, 14-meter-long dragon robot.

Hosting the State Garden Show is a significant boost for the town, according to the mayor. It's an excellent opportunity to address urban planning shortcomings and introduce new projects, like the open park arena, which replaced the old festival hall.

Although the town initially doubted its ability to manage such a large-scale event, the mayor now takes pride in being the host. The proximity to the Czech Republic is reflected in the show's themes, with information boards available in both languages.

The €11.3 million in funding for Furth im Wald, funded by the state and EU, makes this the largest amount ever granted for a State Garden Show, stated Glauber. The next State Garden Show will take place in Bad Windsheim in 2027, with the jubilee edition planned for Nuremberg in 2030.
