Blossoming Metropolis' Variety of Natural Wonders
In the heart of Germany, the city of Erfurt is embarking on an ambitious project to enhance its urban ecosystem. Approximately 16 hectares of "blossom strips" will be created along Erfurt's entrance roads for the Buga year, transforming short grass lawns into vibrant wildflower meadows.
This shift towards meadows offers several environmental benefits. Wildflowers in urban green spaces provide shelter and food for numerous insects, which have been increasingly scarce in the city due to increasing sealing. Meadows in urban green spaces can withstand heat and drought better than short grass, making them a more resilient choice for the city's changing climate.
The "blossom strips" will be adorned with a variety of flowers such as sunflowers, coneflowers, cornflowers, and poppies. These wildflower meadows allow sunlight to penetrate more effectively at ground level, facilitating the growth of diverse plant species that foster richer food webs and shelter.
The project is part of a broader shift in the city's approach to urban green spaces. Since 2017, Erfurt has been rethinking the use of short-cropped lawns, with approximately 44 percent of urban green spaces now mowed only once a year. This reduction in mowing frequency contributes to reduced maintenance needs, lowering energy use and pollution.
Meadows can also store rainwater better than short grass in urban green spaces, helping to mitigate the effects of heavy rainfall. The exact water storage capacity of the "blossom strips" is not yet known.
Eleven farmers will provide their land for the creation of the "blossom strips", strengthening Erfurt's tradition as a city of flowers. The "blossom strips" will greet Buga visitors upon entering the city, enhancing the cityscape in summer.
