BOB Campus Wins Big for Revitalising Abandoned Factory Site
The BOB Campus, a remarkable transformation of a once-abandoned textile factory site, has been recognised for its innovative design and community impact. The campus, owned by Urbane Nachbarschaft BOB gGmbH, a project of the Montag Stiftung Urbane Räume, will be honoured at a ceremony in Düsseldorf on February 9, 2026.
Spanning 16 municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia, the BOB Campus comprises 25 new or renovated buildings and outdoor spaces, designed by raumwerk.architekten Hübert and Klußmann from Cologne, and atelier le balto from Berlin. The campus overcomes significant height differences, revitalising a 1970s factory building, and creates a vibrant, sustainable urban news hub.
The campus combines educational facilities, supported housing, workspaces, and a park, serving as a connecting city space for all generations and cultures. Despite a challenging starting situation, the project's integrative power has fostered new connections with the surrounding district. The involvement of the local community and actors in planning and operation has strengthened social participation and diversity. The non-profit sponsorship and community-oriented goals ensure the campus's maximum sustainability and future viability.
The BOB Campus, a testament to innovative architecture and community engagement, will be formally recognised at the K21 art museum in Düsseldorf. The award underscores the project's significant impact on urban revitalisation and community development.
