Enhancing Bremen's greenery: BSAG station at Ulrichplatz receives an insect-friendly rooftop renovation

Bremen's BSAG station at Ulrichplatz is receiving an insect-friendly makeover with its new rooftop.

In a welcome move towards sustainability, Bremen's Senator for Construction and Mobility, Özlem Ünsal, has applauded the construction of new insect-friendly bus stops. This initiative is part of a broader plan by Bremer Straßenbahn AG (BSAG) to expand green lines in the city.

The green roofing of the bus stop shelters is not only beneficial for insects but also contributes to air purification in Bremen. By the end of June, four bus stops at the Roland-Center in Huchting will be planted in an insect-friendly manner, with 19 further passenger shelters with green roofs being prepared as part of the extension of line 1 in southern Bremen.

The senator encourages other companies and private residential areas to follow this example. The greening of the bus stops is intended to filter pollutants from the air, contributing to a cleaner environment.

The unsealing of the roof surfaces avoids excessive heating due to sunlight, providing a cooling effect in the immediate surroundings. The previously sealed surface can now absorb rainwater and release it through the planting, reducing the need for draining into the sewer.

The new passenger shelter at Ulrichsplatz, operated by BSAG, has been installed on June 3rd. This joint initiative between BSAG and Wall GmbH marks the greening of the tram lines 2 and 3 passenger shelter at Ulrichplatz.

In the coming months, the companies Bremer Straßenbahn AG and Ed. Züblin AG will work together on the implementation of a total of 27 additional green roof tram stops (Gründach-Haltestellen) for the Bremer Straßenbahn AG. The official opening of the first greened passenger shelter is another step by BSAG towards a sustainable infrastructure.

BSAG's technical board member, Thorsten Harder, emphasises this sustainable approach. The roof of this shelter, the first of over two dozen bus stop shelters to be redesigned in an insect-friendly manner by BSAG, is greened to filter pollutants from the air.

The senator believes the example of the greened passenger shelter can make an active contribution to a better urban climate in Bremen. The image above shows the roof greening is intended to filter pollutants from the air. The image source for the above image is BSAG.

This practical solution, as seen by Senator Ünsal, aims to improve the microclimate around the bus stops, making Bremen a greener and cleaner city for all its inhabitants.
