Building exteriors and glass components are undergoing maintenance
The historic Düsseldorf town hall is set to regain its former glory with renovation works scheduled at Market Square 2. The works, which include roof gutter repairs, cleaning of natural stone elements, a color redesign of the facade, crack repairs, and the removal, overhaul, and reinstallation of 21 protected windows, are part of a larger project aimed at preserving these historical buildings.
The buildings in question, particularly those at Market Square 2, show signs of aging with porous, faded, cracked, and weathered cornices, quoins, brickwork, and joints evident on the facades. No specific details about renovation, facade cleaning, repairs, and window restoration for the historical Düsseldorf Town Hall buildings at Market Square 1 and 2 are currently available.
However, relevant context about the Old Town Hall at Market Square 1 includes its construction in 1573 in Renaissance style and extensive renovation in 1749 by Johann Joseph Couven, who added pilasters, cornices, and a new portal with balcony. Post-World War II, the Old Town Hall’s facades were restored, likely involving repairs and facade cleaning to recover war damage.
The building features notable architectural elements like two curved gables and an eight-sided stair tower with the city’s coat of arms and an inscription. No direct information was found on recent or ongoing renovation efforts, including window restoration or facade cleaning specifically for Market Square 1 or Market Square 2 buildings.
The Building Management Office is fulfilling its operational responsibility to address safety requirements and preserve historical buildings through these renovations. A budget of 150,000 euros has been allocated for the works at Market Square 2, and the works will be carried out in close coordination with the monument authority and will be accompanied by specialists in the field.
The renovation works at Market Square 2 will minimize disruptions to the town hall operations. The "Renovation of Municipal Buildings" project also includes work on the interior courtyard facade of the building at Market Square 2. Scaffolding of the facades at Market Square 1 has already begun, with facade-like scaffolding sheets being installed for the duration of the works.
Two distinctive "blue" doors at Market Square 2 will be restored, and the historic windows at Market Square 2 will be maintained, repaired, and given a protective coat. The facade cleaning at Market Square 1 will be performed using high-pressure cleaning with a wet jet method. The building at Market Square 1 will undergo a full renovation of its main, front, and courtyard facades.
Upon completion of the works, the historic Düsseldorf town hall is expected to shine in its former glory. Dorothée Schneider, the city treasurer responsible for the Building Management Office, is pleased with the measures, stating they ensure the long-term preservation of the historic Düsseldorf town hall.
