Case of Soil Depth for Cactus Growth: A Guide

In the world of houseplants, cacti are a popular choice for their unique appearance and hardiness. However, these desert dwellers require specific care to thrive indoors. Here's a guide to help you care for your cactus.

Firstly, it's important to understand that cacti can be damaged by excess sun exposure. Signs of overexposure include a bleached, yellow, or orange appearance, and brown spots or callousing. To ensure your cactus is receiving the right amount of sunlight, place it in a bright room, ideally near a south-facing window. East or west-facing windows may not provide enough sun exposure for desert cacti, but they can be suitable for other species. If your cactus is not getting enough light, periodically rotate the plant so it gets enough light on all sides.

Before watering your cactus, check the condition of the soil. The top 2-3 inches of soil should be completely dry. Cacti prefer around 12 hours of light per day but need a minimum of 4 hours. A lack of light can cause etiolation, discolouration, and root rot.

Cacti require well-draining soil to survive, with a good soil mix draining quickly while retaining enough moisture. A basic recipe for cactus soil is one part washed sand, one part soil, and one part gritty amendment (such as pebbles or pot shards). Organic material like coconut coir, peat moss, or compost can be added to provide additional nutrients and help the soil hold moisture, but be careful not to add too much.

When it comes to watering, there are several recommended techniques. These include deep watering or the soak-and-dry method, bottom watering, drip irrigation, watering tray or saucer, spraying pebbles, and rotating the plant periodically for even light distribution.

During spring and summer, water your cactus every 10-14 days. In winter, when cacti are dormant, you can cut back on watering to every 4-6 weeks. Remember, cacti can store water in their stems, so they don't need to be watered as frequently as other plants.

Lastly, be mindful of planting your cactus too deep. The cactus should be planted in the pot so that the root ball is just below the soil surface. This prevents rot and ensures proper drainage.

By following these guidelines, you'll be well on your way to nurturing a healthy, thriving cactus. Happy gardening!
