Ceramics Biennale in Cēsis, Latvia Kicks Off, Highlighting Rising Local Artistic Potential
The Fifth Latvia Ceramics Biennale has officially opened at the Cēsis Exhibition Hall, marking a significant event on the European cultural calendar. The biennale, organised by the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Ceramics in collaboration with the Cēsis Exhibition Hall and the Rothko Museum, is part of a rich programme of exhibitions and cultural events throughout August and September in Daugavpils, Liepāja, and Cēsis.
The inaugural exhibition, titled "FRESH: New Voices in Latvian Ceramics", is curated by Aivars Baranovskis and Valentins Petjko. The exhibition features the works of eight young women artists who recently graduated from the Art Academy of Latvia's Ceramics Department. The artists include Egija Grīnfelde, Katerina Geiduka, Laima Lauriņa, Linda Ķivule, Linda Zelta, Marta Prēdele, Megija Zonne, and Ojūna Batbajara.
The curators observe that today's ceramic artists create pieces that speak to both globally resonant themes and intimate personal stories. This raw materiality is inseparably tied to the bodily experience and presence, and in the hands of the younger generation, ceramics fascinates with its unmediated, raw artistry.
The exhibition reflects current trends in Latvian contemporary ceramics, and the works on display convincingly dissolve the largely artificial boundaries between art and daily life. The State Culture Capital Foundation of Latvia supports the exhibition, which is on view at the Cēsis Exhibition Hall, Pils Laukums 3, until 28 September.
The biennale is not just a platform for documenting achievements in the field through group and solo exhibitions. It is also a continuous driver of new creative explorations. The theme for the fifth edition is "From Stardust to Lush Sprouts", reflecting the biennale's aim to foster innovation and growth in the field of ceramics.
Visitors to the "FRESH: New Voices in Latvian Ceramics" exhibition can expect a unique and thought-provoking art experience, showcasing the talent and creativity of Latvia's emerging ceramic artists. The exhibition is a must-see for anyone interested in contemporary art and ceramics.
