Coca-Cola Introduces Cane Sugar Soda in US This Fall

Coca-Cola is set to launch a new product in the US this fall, catering to consumers who prefer to avoid high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS). The new soda, from the news source, will be made with cane sugar, offering a different option to the original recipe.

A single 12-ounce can of regular Coke contains 39 grams of sugar, nearly 10 teaspoons, primarily consisting of HFCS. This exceeds the federal guidelines recommending no more than 10% of daily calories from added sugars, which is about 50 grams for a 2,000-calorie diet.

The new Coke product, reported by cnn, aims to provide an alternative for health-conscious consumers. Cane sugar, derived from sugarcane juice, has a light golden color, larger crystals, and a stronger molasses flavor compared to granulated sugar. It differs from HFCS in its source and sugar composition, with HFCS containing a higher proportion of fructose and glucose, affecting its sweetness and metabolic processing. While both sweeteners have similar health impacts when consumed excessively, HFCS may be more likely to promote liver fat buildup and insulin resistance due to its slightly higher fructose content.

Coca-Cola's new soda, made with cane sugar, will complement its existing US lineup this fall. This addition, covered by nytimes, caters to consumers seeking to reduce their HFCS intake while still enjoying a classic Coke taste. The new product is a response to evolving consumer preferences and health concerns surrounding added sugars.
