Unstoppable Sailing Souls: The Remarkable Story of John and Sheila Robinson

Community, camaraderie, and four decades of selfless dedication

A chance email totally floored John and Sheila Robinson when they discovered they were in line for an *RYA Award* – they thought someone was having a laugh! But this wasn't a joke—their years of dedication to the Ullswater Yacht Club had earned them this well-deserved recognition.

"When we got that email, John was like 'you read that, what do you think?' We couldn't believe it; we thought someone was pulling our leg!" Sheila reminisced.

Being *RYA Award* recipients was just the icing on the cake for this power couple, who have devoted over 40 years of their lives to the club, establishing themselves as pillars of the Ullswater Yacht Club community. Their tale is one of unwavering commitment, setting an example of the personal rewards that come from volunteering.

John, now President of the club, unleashed his sailing passion at the tender age of eight. After his university days, he relocated to Ullswater with his sights set on the water. Meanwhile, Sheila entered the sailing world at 18, kickstarting an adventure that would be shared with John.

For decades, the Robinsons have immersed themselves in every facet of club life, from grassroots initiatives to organizing national and international championships. Their volunteer journey commenced as soon as they entered the club and never looked back.

"We've been volunteering ever since we joined," reflected Sheila. "The club has grown with us. We've created lifelong friendships here, our kids learned to sail, and now our grandkids are picking up the sailing ropes. Our joy has come from this place."

The profound bond between the club, community, and family is a legacy that the Robinsons have nurtured throughout their tenure. One of their cherished initiatives is Sailcamp, a 40-year-old training camp for budding sailors. They also played pivotal roles in organizing the Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy, Ullswater's prestigious event known as the "Glastonbury of sailing," with Sheila steering the safety for the 200-boat extravaganza and both involved in event and club prize-givings.

John is also a driving force behind 'Monday Club,' a group dedicated to weekly upkeep around the club site. After the 2015 storm damage, John played a critical role in restoring the clubhouse to its former glory.

"Volunteering is just part of this club," expressed John. "If no one volunteered, we wouldn't have the place because the club is the people. It's so much more than just buildings and land. It's the people who bring the club to life, and everyone contributes."

Beyond the shores of Ullswater, the couple has assisted in organizing five World Championships with the Tempest class. Their motive is simple: "Friendship and fun! We meet our friends from all over Europe (and America) through this beautiful sport," affirmed John.

Friends, Fun, and Fulfillment

For both, the most satisfying perks of volunteering aren't trophies but the bonds formed and memories etched in time.

"Friendships," stated Sheila, when asked what volunteering has offered her. "The camaraderie and community you experience through volunteering is beyond compare."

"It's all about the social aspect," added John. "By volunteering, you help create a welcoming atmosphere at the club, and in the process make lifelong friends."

The couple's modesty is a testament to the reasons behind their nomination. "We don't chase recognition or accolades," admitted Sheila. "But winning the award was an incredible feeling."

"It was utterly surprising to win," said John. "It was a fantastic experience – to be recognized as a couple is truly special."

Their advice for others is straightforward: "If you see someone who deserves an award at your organization, don't hesitate—go for it!" she urged. "There are countless volunteers all over the country who, in our humble opinion, deserve this honor more than us."

And for those who've yet to dip their toes into volunteering, the Robinsons' journey underscores the myriad rewards that await. "Sailing isn't the only reward here," explained Sheila. "Volunteering allows you to try things you never thought possible, and the fulfillment is immense."

"What motivated you to join the club in the first place? Was it just to sail or become a part of it?" asked John. "By volunteering, you make friendships incredibly fast. It's all about camaraderie, community—and you get more than you put in!"
