Construction of the new central library in Essen is underway
The construction of the new central library in Essen's city centre at Markt 5/6 is set to begin on September 20, 2025. This future-oriented, citizen-friendly library will serve as a "third place," catering to diverse needs, offering quiet workspaces and spacious areas for exchange and events.
Katharina Beberweil, the new director of the city library, has expressed her excitement about the new offers and spacious areas planned for visitors. She recently visited the construction site before her first day at work and found the construction work impressive for the citizens.
The new library will be six floors high, connected by an open atrium. Media centres formed from shelves will create clearly recognizable areas within the building. The library will become an inviting, inclusive space with a high quality of stay.
The construction blog for the Essen City Library will start alongside the works on the new central library. Katharina Beberweil will kick off the blog with a personal contribution, providing insights into the creation of the new library. The team of the city library will also contribute to the blog, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the project.
The opening of the new central library is scheduled for the end of 2026. This flagship project is expected to be a significant addition to Essen's city centre, offering a modern and welcoming space for all citizens and visitors.
