Construction Progress in Almaty: New 75 kilometers of roads established, and 650 kilometers restored
Almaty's Transport Network Undergoes Significant Transformation under Mayor Erbolat Dosaev
Over the past three years, Almaty, under the leadership of Mayor Erbolat Dosaev, has embarked on a comprehensive modernization of its transport network. The city's public transport now boasts a 70% share of eco-friendly vehicles, with an average lifespan of the transport fleet extended to 2.5 years. The proportion of roads in good and satisfactory condition has reached 92%, according to the city akimat's press service.
To further enhance the public transport system, tenders have been announced for the purchase of 600 gas-powered buses and 200 electric buses, with delivery planned by the end of 2025. Last year, 600 gas-powered and 100 electric buses were acquired, thereby reducing the average service life of public transport from 6 to 2.5 years. The trolleybus fleet was also fully updated in 2024, with the addition of 212 new trolleybuses.
Addressing current transportation infrastructure issues, a master plan for Almaty's Transport Network has been developed and approved, with a perspective until 2030. The primary goal is to create a more sustainable, efficient, and resident-oriented transport environment, with the aim to increase the share of public transport trips to 64%. Construction on two BRT corridors - along Rayymbek Batyr Avenue and Zhyltokсan Street - has commenced this year.
Over the past three years, 75 km of new roads and 650 km of roads underwent medium repair, contributing to the 92% of roads in good and satisfactory condition. Notable projects include the Auéзова Street cut-through from Gogol Street to Rayymbek Avenue, the Abai Avenue cut-through from Yassawi Street to the administrative center of Nauryzbai District, totaling 3 km. The transportation interchanges at the intersection of Saïna Street - Monke Bi Street and the Kultuijnsky Tract with Bukhtarminskaya Street have been completed, and the Kultuijnsky Tract has been widened from Ryскулова Avenue to Bukhtarminskaya Street.
Plans for the upcoming year involve completing the Saïna Street cut-through from Ryskulova Avenue to Monke Bi Street, as well as the Abai Street cut-through from Auезова Street in the Kalakaman district to the city border.
Almaty's transport network development, under Dosaev's leadership, is characterized by large-scale infrastructure projects, efforts to enhance regional and international connectivity, and steps toward modernizing public transport systems. While direct references to eco-friendly public transit under Dosaev's specific leadership are less detailed in recent reports, Kazakhstan's broader transport modernization efforts indicate a move toward more efficient and potentially cleaner operations. Infrastructure improvements include the Almaty railway bypass, track expansion, and road customs checkpoint upgrades, with the aim to strengthen regional and international connectivity. Digitalization of transport processes and integration with regional networks are prioritized, reflecting Kazakhstan's ambitions to become a central logistics hub in Eurasia by 2030.
- The development of Almaty's transport network, under Mayor Dosaev's leadership, extends beyond the city, as Kazakhstan's broader finance sector invests in the Almaty railway bypass and road customs checkpoint upgrades, aiming to boost regional and international connectivity.
- As Almaty's home-and-garden industry thrives, the extended lifespan of the transport fleet allows for more efficient transportation of goods, contributing to a sustainable lifestyle in the city.
- In addition to enhancing the public transport system, efforts are being made to modernize infrastructure in various industries, such as the introduction of gas-powered and electric buses in the finance sector and the development of digital processes in the lifestyle sector, with the ultimate goal of making Almaty a central logistics hub in Eurasia by 2030.
