Crafting Lux: Behind the Scenes
The infrastructure project "Luxembourg Avenue" in Hürth-Hermülheim, Germany, is moving forward in its second construction phase. Work on the green spaces, sidewalks, and the new cycle street on the west side began in mid-July 2025.
The demolition of the AOK building is set to commence by early October. To minimize the impact on the "Luxembourg Avenue" schedule, the demolition concept has been adjusted. The building wing at the AOK square will be demolished and the site filled first, followed by the dismantling of the building section by section "from front right to back left".
The construction of green spaces, ancillary facilities, and a cycle street between Horbeller Street and Fritz-Räcke Street (west side) is currently underway. Main and disposal lines, along with their connection lines, have been laid on the west side of Luxembourg Street between Horbeller Street and Fritz-Räcke Street. The laying of district heating lines has progressed to Severinus Street.
The road reconstruction is currently focused on the section between Horbeller Street and the AOK Street. Work is underway to create all new canal house connections. The hazardous material remediation in the AOK building is currently underway and is expected to be completed by mid-September.
The "Luxembourg Avenue" project aims to make Luxembourg Street more attractive and livable. The project has received additional funding of 171,600 euros for the planned cycle street from the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport and the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) as project bearers for the special program City and Country of the Federal Government and the Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of the State of NRW. In total, 7,971,413 euros in funding from the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building and from the NRW Ministry of Home Affairs, Municipalities, Building and Digitalization are available for the project.
Occasionally, archaeological artifacts or potential unexploded ordnance have required minor adjustments to the construction schedule. Despite these delays, the project is currently on schedule. However, there are no search results that directly identify the person or institution responsible for the public financing of the "Luxembourg Avenue" project.
The completion of the AOK building demolition is currently scheduled for the end of January 2026. The canal construction from Luxembourg Street 315 to the AOK Street has been extended beyond the originally planned route to Severinus Street.
As the construction progresses, the community looks forward to the enhanced amenities and improved infrastructure that the "Luxembourg Avenue" project promises to bring to Hürth-Hermülheim.
