Digital life detection technology to be introduced for learners by AccXel and Leica Geosystems collaboration
In the heart of Gloucestershire, a new initiative is set to revolutionise the construction industry. The Construction Skills Accelerator Centre, known as AccXel, is scheduled to welcome its first learners in January 2022.
Founded by Nicola Bird, AccXel's mission aligns with the industry's goal to become more sustainable, lean, and efficient. The financial support for AccXel comes from the UK government's Department for Education through the Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) fund, awarded via Gloucestershire's Local Enterprise Partnership, GFirst LEP.
AccXel's collaboration extends beyond local institutions. It includes partnerships with industry giants such as JCB, Leica Geosystems, and K W Bell Group. The latter is working in collaboration with Gloucestershire College and the University of Gloucestershire.
Leica Geosystems, a provider of premium sensors, software, and solutions, is partnering with AccXel. Their support will provide AccXel learners with access to digital detection technology, including digital locators, ground penetrating radars, construction lasers, total stations, and GNSS receivers.
Neil Williams, Industry Director for Heavy Construction at Leica Geosystems Ltd, believes the construction industry is undergoing a digital revolution. Constructing in a digital way is becoming the new norm, according to him.
AccXel's focus on attracting newcomers to the construction industry is evident in its purpose-built training area, equipped with state-of-the-art simulators for machine control training. The equipment, provided by Leica Geosystems, reflects the industry's learning in its courses.
Nicola Bird, AccXel's Founder and Managing Director, has seen the benefits of Leica Geosystems' products over the last four years. She believes there is huge benefit in AccXel having 'digital construction' as a foundation to all its courses, making working on site safer.
Local employers in England and Wales, as well as industry representatives, are also supporting AccXel. This collaborative approach will ensure that the centre's courses are industry-relevant and prepare learners for the demands of the modern construction industry.
The Government's funding for AccXel is part of its Getting Building Fund, further emphasising the importance of skills development in the construction sector. With AccXel's launch, Gloucestershire is set to play a significant role in shaping the future of the construction industry.
