Vintage Tableware
While teacups and plates may be the first things that pop into your head when you think about thrifting, don't overlook the potential of creating a stunning dining setting with beautifully thrifted dishes, linens, and glassware. Whether the pieces match perfectly or their distinct qualities blend harmoniously, you can create a delightful table without breaking the bank. "Setting a table with mixed patterns instantly injects a vintage feel that makes a statement," says Libby Palmieri, founder of House of L Designs. "Color and pattern pairings can evoke a feeling that surpasses the monotony that comes with retail buys."
Designer Clothing
What may not work for one person's wardrobe might be a gem for another. "There's nothing like the thrill of discovering the perfect wool sweater with 100% British origin for $8--something I found recently," says Shannon Wissler, co-founder of Ella Jane Vintage. " Or the softest silk button-up in flawless condition for $6.99. But there's a certain patience involved in this type of shopping. You can spend two hours in a thrift store and walk away with only two or three pieces, and I'm perfectly fine with that. The most surprising treasure I've found at the thrift store (at least currently) are the high-quality pieces still in pristine condition."
Home Appliances
If you need a new blender, don't rush to the store just yet. Check out your local thrift shop first. Many used appliances, like mixers, toasters, and blenders, are still in good condition. As people upgrade their kitchens, perfectly functional old appliances may end up at the thrift store, waiting for their new home. Before bringing an appliance home, make sure to test it to ensure it works properly.
Unique Storage Solutions
For all you DIY enthusiasts, thrift stores are a must-visit. "Finding containers at a thrift store is a great way to add vintage charm to a room," says Katie Agron of Wolfe Design House. "Repurpose old tin cans for pencil holders or vases, use wood crates for magazine storage, or transform dishes into key or remote organizers. These charming finds turn into conversation starters and add a curated look to a space. Who knows, you may even stumble upon a mint-condition, vintage suitcase or an antique steamer trunk that fits perfectly in your home."
First-Edition Novels and Coffee Table Books
Stacks of captivating stories await on the shelves of thrift shops, just waiting to be discovered. From popular books that someone discarded after a single read to rare, first-edition collections and pre-loved coffee table books, you'll be spoiled for choice. Plus, you can bring them home for a fraction of the original price.
Fine Art
Your next living room showpiece could be lurking at your local thrift store. While there are countless tales of thrifters stumbling upon valuable paintings or pottery that eventually sell for small fortunes, there are also countless unique pieces that you'll want to keep for yourself. "Thrifting can be so exciting," says Palmieri. "It's a literal treasure hunt. The right thrift store in the right place can be an endless source of finding pieces for a home."
Vintage Decorations
Whether you're searching for lighting, vases, wall hangings, or almost anything else, you can usually find what you need at thrift stores--usually with more personality than something you'd find at a big-box store. The next time you need a specific item, head to the thrift store instead and discover something with vintage character. "From the inexpensive little trinket to a true collectible, the thrill of discovery is satisfying and takes the generic gloss off the predictable accessories that can dull your overall decor," says Palmieri. "With a little luck and a discerning eye, most thrift stores don't disappoint."
