Discovering Tennessee's Premiere Water Bodies
The Bill Dance Signature Lakes initiative, a collaborative effort between the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Tennessee State Parks, and Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, is transforming the fishing landscape in the Volunteer State. This multi-agency partnership has committed over $25.4 million to improvements both above and below the water at lakes bearing Bill Dance's stamp of approval.
At the heart of this programme is Bill Dance, a native Tennessean and a well-known figure in the fishing world, who has partnered with Tennessee to promote fishing in the state. Known as 'the world's most-loved angler,' Dance is leveraging his expertise and public profile to support sustainable fishing and outdoor recreation in the state.
To date, over 13.1 million fish have been stocked into the 14 Bill Dance Signature Lakes, ensuring a bountiful catch for anglers of all skill levels. These lakes have been selected and enhanced for top-tier fishing and recreation opportunities. One such lake is Pickwick Lake, where Dance learned to fish deep, open water, leading to his success in tournament angling and TV shows. Pickwick Lake offers year-round fishing opportunities.
Beyond fishing, each area surrounding the lakes offers regional charm, unique dining, lodging, history, and cultural experiences. First-time anglers visiting these lakes are advised to consider guided trips, research the area online, or contact local resources for advice. Off-water activities abound in the regions surrounding the lakes, such as state parks, golf courses, and local attractions.
Tennessee has more species of fish than any other state, with over 350 species. This geographic locale and diversity of waters make it a fisherman's paradise. The initiative includes habitat improvement, intensive fisheries management, stocking, access upgrades, and ongoing conservation to ensure the sustainability of these resources.
The Bill Dance Signature Lakes program highlights 14 world-class fishing locations in Tennessee. Locals are often willing to help newcomers to public waters catch fish.
