Dreaming turns to nightmares for a couple pursuing aspirations in the Harz region
In the picturesque landscapes of the Harz region, a dream home for teachers Anke and Ulrich Brockhaus from Hildesheim seemed almost perfect. Nestled among dense forests and idyllic villages, the quaint cottage, known as a "grabenhaus," promised relaxation and a place to retreat for the couple.
However, the Brockhaus couple's experience in the Harz was followed by a series of disappointments. Upon renting out their holiday apartment, they discovered that meeting certain requirements, such as providing fire extinguishers for the fire department, was much more complex than initially assumed.
Their dream home turned out to be a series of unexpected challenges. One of the first issues they faced was the modernization of the listed building while preserving its character. Anke Brockhaus recalls this challenge vividly, as the unreliable well and the three-chamber septic tank, which discharged wastewater "into nowhere," were just the beginning.
The cottage's access was another issue. The Brockhaus couple found out that they did not have access rights to their property, and the path leading to the house was a private one for which an annual fee was due. To make matters worse, the access to the property was not on their own land, but on someone else's property.
The Brockhaus couple's story was shared with "faz.net," the online offering of the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung." In an attempt to resolve these issues, they had to search for the previous owners to negotiate the purchase of additional land. The idea of tapping into the water tower in Altenau was suggested, but the Harz's underground conditions were unknown.
The fence around the property did not match the actual property size, as stated by Ulrich Brockhaus. To add to their woes, they discovered that they did not have legal access to the well, further complicating their water supply situation.
Despite these challenges, the Brockhaus couple's dream home still offers enough space for the couple and a rental apartment. They have not given up on their Harz adventure and continue to face the challenges head-on, hoping to turn their dream home into a reality.
