Europe's First Climate-Neutral Natural Pool Opens in Winsen (Luhe)
A groundbreaking, eco-friendly swimming pool has opened in Winsen (Luhe), Germany. This is Europe's first fully climate-neutral natural swimming pool, using innovative methods to clean water and generate electricity.
The pool employs a unique combination of biological and mechanical processes, along with planted substrate filters, eliminating the need for chlorine. This not only reduces chemical exposure but also promotes biodiversity through natural shorelines and native plant species.
The pool's climate neutrality is achieved through a 66 kWp photovoltaic system, which produces enough electricity to save over 130 tons of CO2 per year compared to a conventional outdoor pool. This, coupled with a sustainable catering concept focusing on regional and seasonal ingredients and minimal plastic waste, ensures a balanced climate footprint.
The idea for this green haven emerged from a public participation process in 2017, following the closure of the Landesgartenschau in Eckermannpark. The project was funded through the federal program 'Adaptation of urban areas to climate change'.
The first climate-neutral natural swimming pool in Winsen (Luhe) sets a new standard for sustainable public spaces. By combining innovative water cleaning methods, renewable energy, and eco-friendly practices, it offers a refreshing, environmentally conscious swimming experience.
