Peeping Into the Virtual Realms of Recto VRso Festival

Jump aboard as we delve into the digitally immersive world of Recto VRso—an international digital art fest, venturing into its 4th edition from April 14-16, 2021, online. Founded by Judith Guez back in 2018, this year's event marked a radical shift, embracing a wholly virtual format due to the global health crisis. Judith and her team admitted it was a "challenging journey into an entirely new format".

The festival kicked off with a 3-day conference program, featuring live performances, talks, seminars, and exhibition spaces. With 800 attendees hailing from 45 countries, this ground-breaking event showcased the biggest digital art extravaganza yet!

Venturing into the Digital Frontier

Recto VRso 4.0 put digital art under the spotlight. Artists, professionals, and creators gather to discuss the impact and adaptations of art in the digital sphere. "The current period has brought about exciting changes in the distribution of art online,. This year's festival served as a platform for exploring these shifts and new forms that are emerging in digital arenas", shares Judith Guez, the festival's founder.

Veteran digital art pioneer, Maurice Benayoun, joined forces with Maxence Grugier, a journalist with a keen interest in the historical trajectory of digital and Net Art, to lend their expertise to this unique event.

Other distinguished speakers from the cultural sector held workshops, seminars, and presentations, shedding light on the transformation of museums, art galleries, and the status of artwork in the digital realm.

A Stir of Creativity

Although virtual, the event aimed to offer interactive and engaging experiences. Over the course of the 3 days, two live performances by Cookie Collective and In-Dialog left audiences mesmerized.

"Birds of Springs," an audio-visual performance by In-Dialog, offered a thought-provoking spectacle that brought people together in awe. Cookie Collective's live stream showcasing Creative Coding gave a thrilling insight into the art of algorithmic creation.

In addition, Recto VRso also presented around 40 virtual exhibition and meeting spaces, providing ample room for artists and professionals to connect and collaborate. The "Recto VRso Area" catered to partners, art centers, and a selection of 2021 works, while the "Research & Creation Area" hosted schools, universities, and laboratories with workshops and project presentations.

Finally, a "ThinkTank" was established by Marie Leblanc and Urszula Gleisner to tackle issues related to the adaptation and virtualization of museums.

Viva Laverso! A physical encounter

The Recto VRso digital art festival doesn't end in 2021! On July 7-11, a smaller, physical counterpart, #2 Physical: Restitution, will take place in Laval, France. This follow-up event plans to showcase approximately ten artworks that debuted online in real exhibition spaces. Judith Guez also invites Rachel Seddoh and her team, who will focus on the transposition of artworks with an ecological component.

All in all, the creative minds behind Recto VRso are not only showcasing the latest digital artwork but also fostering collaboration and camaraderie within the artistic community. Join us in July to witness the fusion of digital and physical art!
