Exceeded Fundraising Goal: Raised an Impressive ISK 5.2 Million

In the heart of Iceland's breathtaking Westfjords region, Kristján Atli Sævarsson recently completed an impressive 14-day trek, covering approximately 600 kilometres. This ambitious hike was a fundraising effort to support the Sólheimar community, specifically to finance the purchase of a new pottery kiln for the Handverkhúsið workshop there.

Kristján's journey began in the summer of 2021, when he set out to traverse the rugged landscapes of the Westfjords. His mother, sensing a unique opportunity, suggested he walk around this part of the country since Reynir Pétur Steinunnarson, a fellow community member or supporter, hadn't done that part.

The cost of the new kiln is approximately 3.7 million ISK, but Kristján's fundraising efforts surpassed expectations, raising around 5.2 million ISK, well beyond the initial target. Upon reaching his destination, the community warmly welcomed him, acknowledging his accomplishment and support for the pottery workshop.

Reynir Pétur Steinunnarson, mentioned in connection with Kristján's journey, appears to have been part of the community or supportive network. However, specific details about Reynir's previous walk are not explicitly outlined in the available sources. The warm reception and community spirit described in the Westfjords, including places like Hólmavík, highlight the close-knit nature of these Icelandic rural areas where everyone knows each other, reinforcing the significance of such community-driven initiatives.

Kristján, known for his handcrafted "Doppa" clay sculptures of ptarmigans, had trained for the journey for over two years. He crafts these intricate sculptures entirely by hand, a testament to his dedication and skill. Upon completion of the trek, he took a two-week rest before returning to his pottery studio.

Looking forward to the summer, Kristján is eager to continue creating his unique "Doppur" sculptures. With the new pottery kiln at Sólheimar now within reach, thanks to his extraordinary efforts, he is excited to see what new creations this equipment will enable.

Beside his proficiency in creating intricate "Doppa" clay sculptures, Kristján Atli Sævarsson also demonstrates a commitment to health and wellness, as evidenced by his 14-day trek in Iceland's Westfjords region. Engaging in fitness and exercise, he raised funds to improve the lifestyle of Sólheimar community members by purchasing a new pottery kiln for the Handverkhúsið workshop. On the other hand, the home and garden sector benefits as Kristján's endeavors generate income for the community, potentially contributing to its overall growth and development.
