Nakagawa, a Japanese craft retailer with roots dating back to 1716, has made its European debut in London with a 10-month pop-up shop in Shoreditch. The bijou 5msq space, located at 16c Calvert Avenue, E2 7JP, was designed by architectural and design firm Jones Neville, in collaboration with graphics by A Practice for Everyday Life.

The design of the London pop-up is inspired by the geometry of a module concept from one of Nakagawa's patterned dish cloths and the Victorian octagonal bandstand in nearby Boundary Garden. The cork floor echoes the modular grid system, resulting in a square pattern with a diagonal seam similar to the dish cloth. The room layout features an octagonal low plinth with storage and display shelves around the edge, and a central octagonal table displaying more wares.

Jones Neville used sycamore from Warwickshire in England's West Midlands for the worktops, central table, and storage doors in the pop-up. A Practice for Everyday Life hand-painted the shop signage for the London pop-up, adding a personal touch to the design.

Nakagawa offers a range of items, from aprons and tea-sets to brooms and bento boxes, all designed to age gracefully with use. Approximately 500 items will be on display, including textiles, ceramics, kitchenware, home accessories, and clothing. The pop-up will host workshops in tea ceremony, kintsugi (golden repair), and traditional ice shaving, providing visitors with a unique cultural experience.

Nakagawa has already established itself with more than 60 directly managed stores in Japan and has held pop-ups in Taipei, Shanghai, Beijing, and Seoul. The London pop-up, which will be open until July 2026, follows a shop at Tokyo's Narita International Airport, designed by Yosuke Hayashi of Tokyo-based design studio.

Two limited-edition dish cloth designs inspired by the Columbia Road Flower Market will be exclusive to the London pop-up. The pop-up is open Tuesday-Saturday 11:00-18:00, Sunday 11:00-17:00. Don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in Japanese craftsmanship and culture.
