Extensive remodeling transforms Edwardian dwelling into charming family abode.
In the heart of Hove, a once ordinary Edwardian house has been transformed into a vibrant and characterful family home, thanks to the creative vision of its new owner, Lucinda Kellaway. The house, which the Kellaways purchased in April 2023, had been a family home for two decades before undergoing a comprehensive four-month renovation.
The Kellaways, who moved from London to Hove in 2019, saw the house's potential and embarked on a project that would reflect their unique style and personal touch. For them, the kitchen, with its doors opening out onto the garden, is the heart of their home.
Lucinda Kellaway approached the renovation with a focus on bespoke fittings, statement furniture, bold paint colours, and design ideas that would harmoniously blend the old and the new. In the kitchen, she created a modern heritage style by mixing and matching colours, adding a fun, informal feel. A shapely headboard was introduced in the bedroom to introduce gentle curves, while the ensuite bathroom was customised with a black double vanity unit, saving money with marble offcuts.
The renovation saw every room in the house touched, with careful thought given to how each space would work for the family now and in the future. Lucinda designed the layout of the rooms, removing chimney breasts in the living room, family bathroom, and master bedroom, and tearing down a wall between the sitting room and galley kitchen, creating a larger open-plan kitchen/dining space.
In the bathroom, a striped stool was added for a fun and waterproof touch, and Venetian bathroom blinds were used to allow light to flood in while ensuring privacy. Brass accents were added to the modern shower and blue bathroom in the ensuite, bringing a touch of old-style glamour. The family bathroom was inspired by a design in the Mitre Hotel, featuring a roll-top cast-iron bath and curvy Victorian-style basin.
Lucinda's approach to the renovation was to blend the old and new sensitively, preserving original features such as wood paneling, stained glass, and fireplaces while introducing modern elements like sustainable materials and energy-efficient layouts. She also prioritised space reconfiguration over large extensions to maintain garden areas and reduce environmental impact, making the home adaptable for multi-generational living or future needs.
The result is a home that is both a testament to the Edwardian era and a reflection of modern living. With its bespoke fittings, statement furniture, bold paint colours, and thoughtful design choices, the Kellaways' home balances character and livability, all while considering sustainability and thoughtful space planning.
