"Fire's Origin": The Museum of the Cathedral
The Museum at St. Pölten Cathedral is set to host the annual exhibition "Born of Fire," beginning on April 10. This exhibition, curated by museum head Ludwig Ortner, offers visitors an immersive experience in a world of flames, making it a cultural must-see for art enthusiasts who appreciate goosebumps.
"Born of Fire" is centered around the theme of fire in Christian history, exploring its symbolic role and impact throughout the centuries. The exhibition takes visitors on a journey through 2000 years of religious history, showcasing a diverse collection of sacred objects.
Among the exhibits are medieval relics, baroque goldsmith art, ceramic nativity scenes, Art Nouveau pieces, and contemporary artworks. The exhibition highlights the sacred dance of flames in Christianity, depicting fire as origin, endpoint, divine sign, force of purification, and eternal threat.
A notable aspect of the exhibition is the depiction of purgatory fire, a place of purification, vivid and gloomy. Scenes of fire disasters have been immortalized on votive images, serving as both warning and hope.
Museum director Barbara Taubinger describes the exhibition as showing the "contagious" nature of fire. Bishop Alois Schwarz underscores the central role of fire in the Bible, from the burning bush to the tongues of fire at Pentecost.
The exhibition aims to demonstrate how the element of fire has shaped spiritual imagination throughout history. It emphasizes the role of fire as a symbol of power, strength, passion, destruction, and pain.
"Born of Fire" is a true highlight at the Museum at St. Pölten Cathedral and offers a unique insight into the symbolic role of fire in Christianity. The exhibition will run until the end of October 2025. Don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the fiery history of Christianity.
