Forest Gathering for Young Employees and Apprentices in Heppenheim
In a commendable move towards environmental responsibility, German home improvement retailer BAUHAUS celebrated its 65th anniversary by launching a forest conservation initiative in collaboration with the Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald (SDW) in the Heppenheimer city forest on July 2, 2025.
The event, known as the Forest Experience Day, was a significant milestone in BAUHAUS's long-term commitment to nature and species protection, which began in 2020 with the planting of over a million trees in German forests. This year, young BAUHAUS talent and apprentices, alongside SDW, returned to the Heppenheimer city forest to inspect a planting area that was newly planted with 1,000 trees by BAUHAUS employees in 2022 and assess the reforestation's development since then.
The Forest Experience Day was not just about inspecting the progress of the reforestation project. It was also designed to convey knowledge about the forest, promote team spirit, and foster a sense of responsibility and future competence among the participants. Christoph Rullmann, Federal Managing Director of the Federal Association of the Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald in Bonn, emphasized the forest's diverse functions and the responsibility we all have for its preservation.
BAUHAUS takes its responsibility towards the company, environment, society, and a healthy home seriously. The company focuses on conserving resources, minimizing its ecological footprint, and ensuring long-term sustainability. This commitment is reflected in its business model, which was revolutionized in 1960 when BAUHAUS introduced a concept of offering a wide range of branded products from various specialist departments under one roof, available for self-service. Each BAUHAUS center is divided into 15 specialist departments, offering high-quality specialist retail and product variety at the best prices.
BAUHAUS's sustainability strategy also prioritizes informing and sensitizing the next generation about environmental responsibility. During the Forest Experience Day, more than 20 apprentices and dual students of BAUHAUS participated, including those in training occupations such as IT specialist, e-commerce merchant, office management merchant, wholesale and foreign trade management merchant, dialog marketing merchant, and dual students in the field of digital commerce management.
The initiative in Heppenheim is part of a broader effort by BAUHAUS. As part of its 65th anniversary celebrations, BAUHAUS is creating urban forest islands nationwide in collaboration with SDW for more nature and biodiversity. Urban forest islands are small, urban mini-forests that provide ecosystem services, benefit species protection, and positively impact the local urban climate.
BAUHAUS is a forward-thinking family business that values long-term planning and action as part of its corporate philosophy. The company's commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility is evident in its actions, from its forest conservation initiatives to its efforts to create urban forest islands.
