Celebrating the 652-Year-Old Forest Donation in Neheim and Hüsten

In the heart of Germany, the picturesque towns of Neheim and Hüsten are gearing up for a unique celebration that pays homage to a historical act of generosity. On September 20th, the annual thanksgiving service for the forest donation made by Count Gottfried IV and his wife Anna over 650 years ago will take place.

The forest, donated in 1368, was more than just a gift. It was a part of medieval structural policy, ensuring the long-term well-being of the town and contributing to the maintenance of the city walls. The donors had a simple wish - for the citizens to pray for them and to hold an annual social gathering.

The festivities in Neheim and Hüsten include a church service, a communal donor meal, and the public distribution of sweets by city council members. The highlight of the event will be the Graf-Gottfried play performed on Gransauplatz at 11 AM, followed by the distribution of sweets. In Hüsten, students from Mühlenberg-Schule will perform their Graf-Gottfried play on the market square in front of the church at 10:30 AM, with sweets also being distributed afterwards.

In addition to the traditional events, the 'Förderverein Altstadt Neheim e.V.' has established the event 'Graf Gottfried rocks' in 2024. This year, on September 19th and 20th, local bands such as '4 Murders,' 'Orange Gold,' 'New Brand,' and 'How Many Roads' will take the stage at Gransauplatz. Admission to these concerts is free, making it an enjoyable event for all.

The festivities will also include a significant moment in Cologne Cathedral. On September 19th, a delegation consisting of citizens, council members, ensigns, and students from Graf-Gottfried-Grundschule and Mühlenbergschule will travel to Cologne Cathedral for a wreath-laying ceremony. Count Gottfried, the only secular ruler buried in Cologne Cathedral, will be honoured in this ceremony.

This year, the organization of the wreath-laying ceremony at Cologne Cathedral has been taken over by the Schützenbruderschaft St. Johannes Baptist Neheim. The annual thanksgiving celebration for the forest donation will take place this year in Arnsberg, marking a change from the traditional location in Neheim.

Despite efforts to find information about the organization of the 'Graf Gottfried rocks' event in 2025 as part of the anniversary celebrations of the forest sponsor Count Gottfried IV, no such information could be found in the search results.

As we approach September 20th, the towns of Neheim and Hüsten are buzzing with anticipation, ready to celebrate a historical event that has shaped their community for over six centuries.
