Hey there! Gather 'round for a juicy tale about the famous crumbling lighthouse, the "Roter Sand". Four ambitious contenders — Wilhelmshaven, Bremerhaven, Hooksiel in the Frisian Wangerland, and Fedderwardersiel on Butjadingen — are after this heritage treasure!
"Nobody's got the edge just yet," says Thomas Mertz, spokesperson for the German Foundation for Monument Protection, sharing with Deutsche Presse-Agentur. The final call isn't here just yet, but we might see some updates happening later in the summer, Mertz adds.
Lighthouse Office Towers: Relocation On the Horizon
This distinctive red-and-white lighthouse situated in the North Sea—between the coast and Helgoland—is expected to soon dance closer to the shore. A 2019 evaluation deemed the nearly 140-year-old maritime structure so run-down that its stability is a long-term concern.
Once a vital beacon guiding sailors safely home, it hasn't been in service since 1964 and has been a protected monument since 1982. Now, the federal government is scouting suitable new homes.
Bremerhaven is back in the game after its initial plan for placing the lighthouse on the Külken peninsula met resistance from the waterways and shipping admin. The city has now proposed a fresh site at Lunesiel on the Weser's south side, a city spokesperson notes. The German Foundation for Monument Protection is in favor of considering this site in the selection process.
