Gem Harris: A Devoted Educator and Community Leader Remembered

Gem Harris, a beloved figure in the Denver community, passed away recently. Born on August 8, 1947, in Denver, Colorado, Harris dedicated her life to education, community service, and youth empowerment.

Harris's journey in education began when she graduated from the University of Colorado Denver with a degree in Elementary Education. Her passion for learning and teaching led her to various roles, but it was her involvement in the docent program at the Rio Grande BioPark that truly showcased her dedication. In 2005, Harris joined the docent programme and shared her knowledge and love for nature with countless visitors. However, due to health issues, she was unable to continue her docent activities.

Harris's life was not just about education. She was deeply committed to her community and her faith. Alongside her husband, William (Bill) Harris, whom she met at a USO dance at Lowry Air Force Base in early 1970, Harris found a community at the Cross of Hope church. The couple was married at the Englewood Methodist church on June 19, 1971, and were married for 54 years until Harris's passing.

Harris is survived by her husband Bill, her brother Arthur Ludka of Lakewood, Colorado, and his wife Barbara, their daughter Angela, and her daughters Ashley and Skye. Bill is also survived by his sister, Suzanne Paul of Farmington Michigan, and her husband Charlie Paul, and their three children, Vince Paul, Coreen McElroy Paul, and Sara Bowman.

In addition to her work in education and community service, Harris was a cofounder and board member of the Young Women's Leadership Development Program. This programme provided free services to young women from poor neighbourhoods, reflecting Harris's commitment to youth empowerment and community development.
