Hamm Joins Climate Initiative Klima.Werk to Adapt to Extreme Weather

Dr. Frank Obenaus, Technical Director of Lippeverband and Emschergenossenschaft, is leading an ambitious project to adapt water management and urban infrastructures to the challenges of climate change. The initiative, Climate Initiative Klima.Werk, is expanding with the city of Hamm joining its municipal network.

The initiative's core focus is on managing rainwater effectively. It promotes urban planning strategies that prioritise water-conscious transformation and storage. This approach aims to ensure flood protection and enhance overall quality of life in participating cities.

The network has welcomed two new members: the city of Hamm and the city of Oer-Erkenschwick. Both cities have joined the Zukunftsinitiative Klima.Werk to work on climate adaptation measures, particularly in relation to extreme weather events and sustainable rainwater management. The initiative now involves 16 cities and municipalities along the Emscher and 5 from the Lippeverband region, with more expected to join.

Mayor Marc Herter of Hamm welcomed the city's membership, committing to implementing climate adaptation measures. The initiative encourages municipalities to set a good example on their own properties and support others in adopting similar measures.

The Climate Initiative Klima.Werk, led by Dr. Frank Obenaus, is growing with the addition of Hamm. The initiative focuses on adapting cities to climate change, particularly through rainwater storage, to mitigate the effects of extreme weather events.
