Heavy Rainfall Batters Spain: Flooding, Power Outages, and Emergency Responses
Heavy rainfall battered parts of Spain on Monday, September 29, 2024, leading to widespread flooding and emergency responses. The Balearic Government's military emergency team was deployed to assist in the provinces of Guadalajara and Cuenca in Castilla-La Mancha, while multiple regions faced severe weather conditions.
The day began with a mass alert sent to mobile phones, warning the public of the high flood risk. Several coastal municipalities in the Community of Valencia, including Gandía, Cullera, and Sueca, experienced water spouts that required firefighter interventions to rescue trapped residents.
In Ibiza, heavy rainfall between 12:30 and 13:00 caused power outages and rescues from vehicles and homes. Weather stations recorded over 230 liters per square meter, with some areas in the delta of the Ebro registering over 300 liters per square meter. The town of Aldaia in Valencia saw the La Saleta ravine overflow, flooding streets but causing no major damages.
Tuesday brought further challenges to the Balearic Islands of Ibiza and Formentera, with a red alert declared and the Military Emergency Unit (UME) called in. The general emergency department registered 132 incidents, but fortunately, no fatalities or serious injuries were reported. An orange alert was also issued for the northern Alicante coastline, affecting 53 municipalities and nearly 179,000 students. Extreme precipitation values were recorded, such as 66 liters per square meter in Sueca in just 35 minutes and 20 liters per square meter in Valencia's maritime neighborhoods in 20 minutes.
The heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding caused significant disruption across Spain, with emergency services working tirelessly to keep residents safe. While no major damages or fatalities were reported, the extreme weather conditions serve as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and quick response in such situations.
