Paddleboard Season Kicks Off: Stiftung Warentest Reviews Top-Rated Boards
High-quality stand-up paddle boards deemed excellent.
Summer is fast approaching, and the weather's not the only thing heating up! The much-anticipated paddleboard season is just around the corner, and Stiftung Warentest has been busy testing inflatable stand-up paddle boards (SUPs) to help you make an informed decision before hitting the water.
These kits, which include paddle, pump, safety leash, and bag, have a price tag ranging from a wallet-friendly 350 to a premium 888 euros. Want to know which boards are worth the investment? Let's dive in!
Sports enthusiasts and experts have put these boards through their paces on the Red Sea, testing their driving, turning, braking, rocking, and jumping capabilities. Not just fun, but necessary to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for paddleboarders of all levels.
Outstanding Boards: Four Stunners and One Dud
As one might expect, the lab tests focused on safety and durability. One board failed to meet the mark, earning a "deficient" rating due to harmful softeners on the standing surface ("F2 Strato 10.5 Blue12"). It's essential to note that a missing or inadequately tear-resistant safety leash also poses a safety risk. "The leash secures your foot or hip to the board, acting as a lifesaver and should always be within reach," explains test leader Nico Langenbeck. His advice to paddleboard enthusiasts: "Always check if a leash is included in the set; if not, be sure to buy one."
Of the ten inflatable boards tested, four earned a "good" rating. The best SUP board, the "Jobe Leona 10," showcases excellent driving properties andUser-friendly handling for approximately 600 Euro (grade 2.1). The "Naish Nalu 10'6" boasts the top driving performance, though pumping it up requires a bit more effort (grade 2.4). Looking for a bargain? The price-performance winner is the "Bluefin Cruise 10.8 Legacy Blue." At just 449 Euro, this set includes a seat. However, it ranks as the heaviest board in the test, weighing in at eleven kilograms, and the test team found the large carrying bag to be inconvenient (grade 2.5).
Making Waves: Additional Models to Consider
While the top-rated boards are worth shouting about, it's essential to consider other models as well. One notable example is the "F2 Strato" model, which was singled out for containing harmful softeners, impacting its overall rating.
Those searching for an affordable option should look no further than Decathlon's SUP. While it didn't make the top tier, it didn't disappoint either, with its handling requiring frequent hand changes to maintain a straight course.
As always, stay tuned for more insights, and happy paddling!
