Historic Alkmaar Town Comes Alive With Pages of Past
Step Back in Time: Alkmaar's Kaeskoppenstad, June 7-8, 2025
Get ready to journey through the annals of history! The North Holland city of Alkmaar invites you to a magical adventure, "Kaeskoppenstad," on June 7 and 8, 2025. Immerse yourself in 16th-century life, just a few years after the city's liberation from Spanish rule during the Eighty Years' War.
A Living Time Capsule
As you step into "Kaeskoppenstad," you'll enter a vibrant, tangible history book. Hundreds of enthusiastic actors and volunteers bring Alkmaar's past to life, letting you experience the daily lives of its former residents in 1573. The city center's streets have been artistically divided into four distinct zones: Trade & Crafts, Glory & Power, Sorrow & Pain, and Purity & Care.
Wander through the Trade & Crafts district and watch as laundry is hung out to dry, breathe in the aroma of open fires, and listen to fishwives hawk their wares. Turn a corner, and witness the chilling sight of a plague outbreak, with prisoners under guard. The thrilling part? You're not just an observer but part of the action.
Famous Faces of Alkmaar
The 2025 Kaeskoppenstad event will introduce you to two remarkable Alkmaar inventors. Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater, born in De Rijp, played a crucial role in draining the region around Alkmaar in the 17th century. Cornelis Drebbel, famously known as the inventor of the thermostat, designed an egg incubator for the English king in 1609.
This will mark the 16th edition of Kaeskoppenstad, which kicks off with the "Bonte Stoet," a lively procession featuring the actors' grand entrance into the historic city center at 11:15 AM. Kaeskoppenstad is open on both days from 12:00 to 17:00, attracting around 25,000 visitors each year. Tickets can be purchased at the box office or online.
