Indian Leadership in Sustainable Development: Paving the Way for Environmental Progress in India
The Confederation of Indian Industry's (CII) Green Business Centre (CII-GBC) has been at the forefront of India's mission to become a net-zero carbon emitter by 2070. Established in 2004, the CII-GBC was inaugurated by the late Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the then-President of India.
Over the years, the CII-GBC has evolved into a comprehensive platform, providing industries with the tools and knowledge they need to reduce their environmental impact. Its services encompass best practices in energy efficiency, waste management, and renewable energy adoption.
One of the key initiatives by CII-GBC is the Green Company Rating system, which evaluates businesses on their environmental performance and encourages continuous improvement in sustainability efforts. Another notable initiative is the Green Cooling Council, aiming to promote energy-efficient and eco-friendly cooling technologies.
The CII-GBC's focus on innovation is also evident in the Green Mobility Council, which promotes electric vehicles and sustainable transportation solutions, and the Green Entrepreneurship Council, designed to build a thriving cleantech ecosystem in India.
The CII-GBC's Green Product Certification (GreenPro) initiative certifies products that are environmentally sustainable, resource-efficient, and safe for consumers and the planet. The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), spearheaded by CII-GBC, promotes sustainable design, construction, and operations in the building industry.
In 2003, the CII-GBC was recognised as the world's greenest building, and it has been an IGBC Platinum Net Zero Energy Building since 2019. The CII Net Zero Programme, recently introduced by CII-GBC, assists businesses and industries in decarbonizing their operations.
CII-GBC works closely with industries, businesses, and government agencies to implement green practices on a large scale. Its diverse and comprehensive approach is vital in shaping India's sustainable future. Through its various initiatives, CII-GBC is making significant strides in promoting energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainable practices across industries, contributing to a greener and more resilient India.
