Insuring Portable Personal Belongings Away from Home
RACV Contents Insurance offers an additional layer of protection for your portable possessions with the Portable Items Cover. This optional extra can safeguard items such as laptops, mobile phones, bicycles, and mobility scooters when they are lost, stolen, or unintentionally damaged outside your home.
The Portable Items Cover insures items designed to be taken with you or worn, including portable electronic devices, sporting equipment like bicycles, and mobility scooters. The main groups covered under this cover are:
- Jewellery and watches (rings, watches, bracelets, necklaces, medals)
- Portable electronic devices (laptops, cameras, mobile phones, smart watches, fitness bands)
- Clothing and luggage (including baby capsules, clothes, luggage, purses)
- Sporting and recreational items (bicycles, musical instruments, camping and sporting equipment)
- Glasses and medical items (sunglasses, prescription glasses, hearing aids)
- Mobility scooters
Standard contents insurance usually only covers items inside the home, so portable valuables often go uninsured outside unless the Portable Items Cover is purchased.
To insure an item for more than $10,000, you may be asked to provide a written valuation. For items over $25,000, a valuation certificate or purchase receipt is required. Your Portable Items Cover can be increased at any time, provided you aren't in the process of making a claim for the item.
It is important to note that the Portable Items Cover does not cover accidental loss or damage caused intentionally, loss or damage due to wear and tear, or loss or damage to items that are used for business purposes. Additionally, items being cleaned, repaired, or restored are not covered under Portable Items Cover.
If you take your portable items outside Australia or New Zealand, coverage is limited to $10,000 for all items. 'Portable items' are defined as contents items that you or your family own and are designed to leave your insured address with you or on you.
When adding portable items to your policy, the value covered (your sum insured) needs to be based on how much it would cost to replace the item/s at today's prices.
