Introduced penguins at the zoo.

After months of planning, Humboldt penguins have finally made their way to the Nizhny Novgorod Zoo. And it's not just any penguins—these birds have been specially selected to help establish a breeding program within the zoo.

The search for suitable male penguins began a couple of years back, but it wasn't until now that the zoo staff found mature, sexually-active males from the Primorsky Oceanarium.

Marina Andronova, the zoo's press secretary, shared, "The key criteria were mature males, ready to form pairs. We managed to find these rare birds in the Primorsky Oceanarium. This isn't a common occurrence in Russia, given that there are only around 12,000 pairs of Humboldt penguins globally, with merely over a hundred in Russia."

Anton Brykov, head of the Marine Mammals Service at the Primorsky Oceanarium, added, "We'll be keeping a close eye on these birds, monitoring their behavior and reproduction in their new environment. Females of this species are smaller and more slender than males. They're still getting acquainted."

Natalia Buslaeva, Head of the Birds Section at the Nizhny Novgorod Zoo, reported that the introduction of the male penguins sparked some initial squabbles, but the girls are adjusting well now.

The breeding season is expected to begin in December, and with proper nutrition, Humboldt penguins can produce two broods in a single year. Zoo staff eagerly await the formation of pairs and the starting of a new generation of Humboldt penguins in the heart of Russia.

Remember that the exact reason for the introduction of these specific male penguins to the Nizhny Novgorod Zoo isn't publicly disclosed. Speculation about the purpose includes breeding programs, conservation efforts, educational outreach, or gender ratio balancing, but without official confirmation, it remains speculative.
