Island workers, specifically urban apprentices, labored for a span of two weeks in Mainau
Gardener Apprentice Gains Exotic Knowledge on Germany's 'Flower Island'
Hilke Stevens, a 21-year-old apprentice gardener from Nordhorn, recently spent nearly two weeks working on the Island of Mainau, a tourist hotspot located on the edge of Lake Constance near Konstanz. Known as the 'Flower Island', Mainau offers unique natural experiences and is home to a botanical garden with around 1200 different rose varieties, impressive giant sequoias, and an Italian flower water staircase.
During her time on the island, Stevens was trained by Heinz Jülicher and was provided with detailed care instructions for the exotic plants found there, including banana plants. This was the first time an apprentice from the municipal nursery of Nordhorn participated in such an exchange.
Upon her return, Stevens submitted an exchange report to her trainer, Reinhold Schnieders, from the Green Department of the city of Nordhorn. Schnieders views the offer from the Caritas Konstanz, the organizer of the training exchange initiative, as an ideal complement to his previous training program.
Stevens found the climate on Lake Constance to be different from North Germany, and she believes that the specialist knowledge gained from this experience has enriched her training as a gardener. According to Schnieders, the apprentices gain knowledge of tasks and plants that are not available in Nordhorn, bringing new ideas and a better understanding of their own performance after working in another team.
In addition to gardeners, the city of Nordhorn is also seeking apprentices in the fields of general administration, automotive mechatronics, media and information services, and event management. The city offers training in six different professions, making it an attractive destination for those seeking a comprehensive and varied apprenticeship.
