Japanese Quails: India's Booming Low-Cost Farming Opportunity

Japanese quails, native to East Asia, are gaining popularity in India for their meat and eggs. They require minimal space and offer rapid growth and high egg production, making them a low-cost farming option.

Japanese quails are small, rapidly growing birds that mature quickly. They start laying eggs at six to seven weeks and are ready for meat use at just six weeks. This rapid growth is achieved by feeding them high-protein starter feed for the first three weeks, followed by grower feed and then layer feed for egg production.

Quail eggs are nutrient-dense, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and offer health benefits like boosting immunity and heart health. They sell for about Rs. 7 per piece, making them a profitable venture. Similarly, quail meat sells for as much as Rs. 75 per bird.

Proper housing is crucial for quail farming. The space required per bird is approximately 0.15 square feet, and the housing should be clean, dry, well-ventilated, and warm during the brooding period. The initial investment for a small quail farm of 500 birds ranges from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 30,000.

Japanese quail farming offers numerous benefits, including rapid growth, high egg production, low space requirements, and low cost. With proper housing and feeding, quails can provide a steady supply of nutrient-rich eggs and meat, making it a lucrative business opportunity in India.
