Journey to the Arctic's Lofoten Islands: A Thrilling Voyage by Motor Boat Continues Northward

Norway Bound: An adventure from Karlskrona to Lofoten

Per Harrtoft, 60-year-old yacht owner, is cruising his Grandezza 40 Fly, Deamare, from his home on Sweden's southeast coast to the Lofoten Islands in Norway's far north. With only two months for the 1,400nm journey, he's cramming in as much sea time as possible when the weather permits.

After a day in Bergen, a change of crew sees old friend Jorgen joining Per for the next three weeks before returning to Gothenburg. Leaving Bergen, they push Deamare's engines to their happiest 31 knots and sail north through picturesque scenery of immaculate houses, lighthouses, and stunning views.

A sobering encounter with two Norwegians who suffered an engine breakdown in 6m waves serves as a reminder of the challenging conditions ahead - the infamous Stad Peninsula, where they're heading tomorrow.

Following a warning from Jorgen about a loose rope at the fuel dock, they fill up their tanks in Bergen and make their way to Maløy. After beating the harsh seas around the Stad Peninsula, Per and Jorgen celebrate with a traditional Swedish fika (coffee and cake).

The journey continues, with the pair covering long distances between islands and fjords, stopping in Alesund, Kristiansund, and Rost. They experience the thrill of crossing the Arctic Circle and cutting directly across to Rost, the outermost island group in Lofoten, instead of their original plan.

The crew encounters engine trouble in Rost, with the drive belts for the superchargers on both engines failing. After setting sail again, they reach the picturesque Lofoten archipelago, exploring islands by bike and marvelling at the midnight sun.

Their Lofoten adventure continues, with Per and Jorgen exploring more islands and enjoying the unique culture, wildlife, and landscapes that this captivating region offers.

[Tips and tricks for a successful Lofoten voyage:
