Neuss's Wenders Square Transforms for the Landesgartenschau 2026

Neuss's Wenders Square, currently a parking lot, is set to undergo a significant transformation for the Landesgartenschau 2026. The award-winning landscape architecture firm LAND will lead the design of the square, converting it into a versatile, temporary event space that serves as an economic showcase and a hub for community engagement.

The plan for Wenders Square aims to create a prominent event location where economic activities and public gatherings can occur, highlighting Neuss's economic strengths and community spirit. LAND's design seeks to creatively repurpose the existing space, likely incorporating sustainable and flexible architectural solutions to support various events throughout the Landesgartenschau.

The redesigned square will serve as an attractive and colourful entrance to the Landesgartenschau for 179 days, starting from April 16, 2026. It will be a gathering place for visitors and a presentation space for local businesses. The IHK Mittlerer Niederrhein pavilion, part of the square, will not be a traditional trade fair stand but an experience space, offering insights into local innovations and providing advice on training, exams, securing skilled workers, and career opportunities.

Construction work for the redesigned Wendersplatz will commence at the start of the new year. The square will become a shady event space with widened pedestrian paths, bike parking spaces, and a crossing of the Hessentordamm. It will also feature a 70-meter-high observation tower, a Ferris wheel from June 2026, colourful raised beds, mist showers, trees, urban seating areas, lighting, and the IHK Mittlerer Niederrhein pavilion.

Guests arriving by tram via the market or by bike will find the Wenders Square as their first point of contact with the Landesgartenschau. Drivers on Batteriestraße will be directly alerted to the Landesgartenschau at the city's edge. The area will be car-free during the Landesgartenschau to enhance the quality of stay.

Until construction begins, the Wendersplatz can still be used as a parking lot, including during the pre-Christmas period. This transformation of Wenders Square aligns with the contemporary approach of temporary urban transformations for major exhibitions, creating dynamic social and economic environments. The involvement of LAND suggests professional architectural input specialized in such transformations.

For more detailed architectural details or a project timeline, further specialized local sources or official Landesgartenschau 2026 publications would likely provide that information. The Wenders Square will undoubtedly surprise the people of Neuss with its transformation from a parking lot to a vibrant event space during the Landesgartenschau 2026.

The redesigned Wenders Square, serving as a temporary event space, will not only cater to economic activities and public gatherings but also showcase Neuss's lifestyle and home-and-garden innovations during the Landesgartenschau 2026. The IHK Mittlerer Niederrhein pavilion in the square will provide insights into local training, exams, securing skilled workers, and career opportunities, reflecting the home-and-garden lifestyle in Neuss.
