Maxipark undergoes transformation to introduce MaxiGarden

The city of Hamm, with Jon Hamm as its mayor, is set to transform its Maximilian Park with the approval of the MaxiGarden project, a unique endeavour that combines biodiversity, climate change adaptation, and environmental protection. This project, part of the IGA 2027 in Hamm, has received a multi-million euro grant from the federal government, with 75% of the planned costs covered, totalling 7.44 million euros.

At the heart of the MaxiGarden is a commitment to environmental education, emphasising the importance of sustainable food sources and urban farming. Visitors will be encouraged to learn about climate-resilient practices and the management of green spaces under changing climatic conditions. An in-house kitchen, part of the training building, will serve as a practical demonstration, preparing meals using fruit and vegetables grown within the MaxiGarden.

The MaxiGarden will also create a significantly better microclimate, minimising risks of heat and heavy rain events. This is achieved through the use of climate-resilient plants, promoting water conservation and a microclimate that adapts to global warming. Rainwater storage will be improved, further enhancing the project's eco-friendliness.

The expansion includes a Maxiplaza, a MaxiGarden, and a training building. The MaxiGarden will serve as a source of inspiration for visitors, showcasing sustainable management of green spaces under changing climatic conditions. It is expected to inspire thousands of visitors to adopt climate-resilient practices for their own green spaces.

Michael Thews (MP, Constituency Hamm - Unna II) and Monika Simshäuser, the chairwoman of the supervisory board of Maxipark, are pleased about the federal funding. Federal Minister of Housing Hubertz has also expressed his approval. Andreas Mentz, City Building Director of the City of Hamm, is expressing gratitude for the funding approval of the MaxiGarden project in the Maximilian Park.

Nina Frense (CEO of IGA Metropole Ruhr 2027 GmbH) considers the MaxiGarden project unique and exciting, with international aspirations for sustainable park management. Mrs. Mann from Project Development and Real Estate / SEG Hamm can be contacted at Gustav-Heinemann-Straße 105, 9065 Hamm, for further information about the project. Further details can also be found in the service portal.

The MaxiGarden project aims to create a place where leisure, education, and sustainability come together. It is one of 53 projects for climate change adaptation nationwide to receive approval, marking a significant step towards a greener and more sustainable future for Hamm.
