Meet Sandy Williams IV: Alexandria's 250th Art Commemorator
Alexandria's Office of the Arts is hosting a reception with Richmond-based artist Sandy Williams IV on October 7, from 6:30 to 8 PM at the Torpedo Factory Art Center. The event marks the beginning of the city's preparations for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, with Williams selected to create the next Time & Place public art project.
Sandy Williams IV, an interdisciplinary artist and assistant professor at the University of Richmond, holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia and a master's degree in sculpture and extended media from Virginia Commonwealth University. Their work, which explores the vernacular of time across cultural landscapes and personal experiences, has been recognized with fellowships like the 2024 Joan Mitchell Fellowship.
Williams has been invited by the City of Alexandria's Public Art Program to create a temporary public artwork for Time & Place 2026. This project, part of the city's commemoration of the Declaration of Independence's 250th anniversary, will be displayed from May to November 2026 in the courtyard of the Alexandria Circuit Court at 520 King Street. At the upcoming reception, Williams will share examples of past work and discuss their interest in the project.
The reception on October 7 offers an opportunity to meet Sandy Williams IV and learn more about their vision for Time & Place 2026. The event begins at 6:30 PM, with remarks starting at 7 PM in the Overlook Room, 105 N. Union St., third floor, Room 325. The city looks forward to this collaboration with Williams, as it continues to celebrate its rich history and anticipate its future.
