Fire Away: mpk Carves a Path with Art that Provokes

Get ready for a monumental artistic experience as the Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern (mpk) celebrates its 150-year milestone in style! This Palatine city gem’s jubilee program includes a fresh redesign of its collection and an exciting new presentation.

Steffen Egle, the museum's director, announced the ribbon-cutting event by Minister-President Alexander Schweitzer (SPD) on May 11th. He revealed that the exhibition has been reworked to make art more experimental and interactive. The exhibition will be sorted into three circuits: "What is Art?", "The Human in Art", and "Art with All Senses". Stepping away from traditional arrangements, these circuits showcase nearly 300 museum pieces across various mediums.

During the opening weekend, you can partake in a pre-opening party and a family day. The new layout will bring back hidden works, include opportunities for visitor participation, and showcase a wall painting by Edvard Frank that hasn't been visible since the 1980s.

A special exhibition titled "Time Leap - Purchased. Exchanged. Stolen?" will shed light on the mpk's history during the Nazi era, focusing on provenance research. Steffen Egle emphasized the importance of addressing the art house's history during that era in the anniversary year.

The architectural charm of the 1950s building will be exposed through renovations, and the collection continues to grow with generous donations from the Lenhardt Foundation and the Utermann Gallery. In addition, visitors can witness sculptures by Franz Bernhard and Maximilian Hutlett that add an extra layer of excitement to the jubilee.

The best part? All events are reportedly free!

Spanning 150 years, this anniversary marks the founding of the Palatine Industrial Museum Association in December 1874, which eventually resulted in the birth of the museum.
